The rule of law depends on us.
As a tumultuous period for law and liberty continues, we remember that our Constitution is not self-enforcing. Its survival depends on people willing to defend it.
In recent years, we have witnessed sustained assaults on the legitimacy of the judiciary, the politicization of law enforcement, and the infringement of the Rule of Law as a bedrock of constitutional democracy.
These are existential threats to our foundational rights and liberties as Americans.
Overcoming them will take dedication and time. Let it begin here.
Join the Work
The Society for the Rule of Law rises to meet this moment.
We are building a community of principled Americans—lawyers, judges, scholars, and engaged citizens—who refuse to accept the abandonment of constitutional norms and who are committed to defending the Rule of Law in both word and action.
When you become a member, you seize an opportunity to join ranks with those who share your reverence for the Rule of Law and for American democracy.
You stand with a community that sees what is happening and chooses to act.
What Membership Makes Possible
With the support of our members, we are already doing the work:
- Convening national audiences through our annual Rule of Law Summit and public programming
- Hosting in-person events across the country, from Washington, DC to Phoenix to San Francisco
- Initiating serious legal discussion at leading universities and law schools
- Publishing widely read legal analysis and commentary shaping the national conversation
- Advancing high-impact legal advocacy, including amicus briefs in cases of national consequence
- Building coalitions to push back against the politicization of law enforcement and defend institutional integrity
This work is necessary.
But it is not yet sufficient to scale the challenge before us.
Why This Moment Matters
For generations, Americans trusted that the law would be applied impartially, that our rights would be protected, and that those in power remained accountable to the Constitution. That trust was enabled by our shared commitment to the Rule of Law.
Today, that foundation is under strain. Across the political spectrum, the Rule of Law is increasingly treated as an obstacle to work around when it stands in the way of preferred outcomes, rather than the system that governs us all. This approach weakens due process, undermines legal ethics, and erodes constitutional limits on power.
The Rule of Law is what makes our rights and liberties real. Whether they endure depends on whether we defend the principles that sustain them.
