Our mission is to protect the Constitution and the rule of law against rising threats posed by illiberal forces in our society, without regard to political party or partisan affiliation.
The Society was founded as Checks & Balances in 2018 by a group of conservative lawyers and jurists who have served at the highest levels of government in previous Republican administrations. They shared a belief in the rule of law, the integrity of the criminal justice system, and the Constitution. We re-launched in 2023 as the Society for the Rule of Law with a renewed vision to defend and advance our shared beliefs.
Through our public education, events, and programming, we seek to build a community of lawyers, law students, and others who support the fundamental beliefs expressed in our mission statement and wish to advance these values in the public square. With that shared commitment, we welcome those of various political and jurisprudential opinions and diverse perspectives on existing groups, parties, and institutions. We encourage debate and dialogue, as we work together to strengthen our Republic for generations to come.
And we want you to be a part of it. Become a member today.
Mission Statement
We are a group of attorneys, law students, and other public-spirited citizens who would traditionally be considered conservative or libertarian. We believe in the rule of law, the power of truth, the integrity of the criminal justice system, the imperative of individual rights, and the necessity of civil discourse. We believe these principles apply regardless of the party or persons in power. We believe, as the Founders did, in “a government of laws, not of men.”
We believe in the Constitution. We believe in free speech, a free press, separation of powers, and limited government. We have faith in the resiliency of the American experiment. We seek to provide a voice and a network for like-minded individuals to discuss these ideas, and we hope they will join us in standing up for these principles.
