About the Society for the Rule of Law

The Constitution and the Rule of Law are the foundation of American liberty. They protect our rights, preserve our system of self-government, and ensure that no person is above the law.

Today, those principles face growing challenges from illiberal forces across the political spectrum. Increasingly, constitutional safeguards are treated as obstacles to political victory rather than pillars  of responsible liberty.. At the Society for the Rule of Law, we believe that upholding the Rule of Law is the duty of any lawyer or public servant.

Our mission is to protect the Constitution and the Rule of Law against these threats without regard to political party or partisan affiliation.

Founded in 2018 as Checks & Balances by a group of conservative lawyers and former public officials, the Society was created as a principled advocate  in defense of constitutional government, the integrity of our legal institutions, and the impartial administration of justice. In 2023, we relaunched as the Society for the Rule of Law to reflect an expanded vision: building a lasting community dedicated  to preserving our Republic’s foundational precepts.

Today, we unify  attorneys, judges, law students, scholars, and engaged citizens who share a commitment to the Constitution and the Rule of Law. Through legal advocacy, educational programming, public events, publications, and professional networking, we uphold these principles in the courts, in our communities, and in the public square.

Our members provide a robust variety of political, legal, and philosophical perspectives . We welcome thoughtful disagreement and encourage rigorous debate grounded in facts, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to constitutional governance. While we will not always agree on policy outcomes, we believe that our constitutional system provides the framework through which those disagreements should be resolved.

The Rule of Law belongs to every American. Protecting it requires citizens willing to defend constitutional principles even when doing so is difficult or politically inconvenient.

If you share that commitment, we invite you to join us.

Mission Statement

The Society for the Rule of Law is a community of attorneys, students, scholars, and public-spirited citizens dedicated to defending the Constitution and the Rule of Law.

We believe in a government of laws, not of men. We believe the Constitution must be faithfully interpreted and applied regardless of who holds political power. We believe in the separation of powers, an independent judiciary, due process, free speech, a free press, limited government, the integrity of the criminal justice system, and the protection of individual rights.

We believe that these bipartisan principles are the essential safeguards of a free society.

Through legal advocacy, public education, and civic engagement, we seek to strengthen constitutional government and build a network of Americans committed to preserving the Rule of Law for future generations.
