Statement on King Charles’ Address to Congress
The Society for the Rule of Law Institute was heartened by King Charles’ timely address to Congress this week. His speech highlighted our shared common law heritage; the value of checks and balances, dating back to the Magna Carta; and the indispensable role the Rule of Law plays in securing liberty and prosperity. We hope his invocation of these bedrock principles—which animated our founding 250 years ago and have defined the American experiment ever since—serves as a necessary reminder of their paramount importance.
Yet there is also an inescapable irony in Congress receiving a much-needed civics lesson on the separation of powers from a British King. Indeed, we wish Congress checked executive power with the same enthusiasm it displayed in applauding the idea of doing so.
Ultimately, King Charles is right that the Rule of Law and an independent judiciary remain the greatest bulwarks of our freedom and equality. So as we approach America’s 250th anniversary, we should all recommit ourselves to safeguarding these precepts for generations yet to come.
