Statement on Attempted Trump Assassination

July 15, 2024

The Society for the Rule of Law issued the following statement in response to the attempted assassination of Donald Trump:

The leadership of the Society for the Rule of Law condemns the attack against former President Trump, and expresses profound condolence for the family of the murder victim of the deadly attack and deep sympathy for the citizens who were critically wounded.

Nothing could be more antithetical to our democracy and the rule of law than political violence. Americans have a fundamental right to participate in our democratic process with full confidence in their own personal safety and the protection of all figures in the political arena.

We call on U.S. political leaders and participants in our democratic process to eliminate violent rhetoric from their lexicon and, instead, acknowledge that all Americans deserve respect and good will.

Democracy in America is in peril if we treat each other as blood enemies rather than as fellow citizens.

We wish former president and presidential candidate Trump a full and speedy recovery, as well as the other victims of this terrible attempted political assassination.

As President Lincoln said:

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”
