Legal Organizations File Amicus Briefs Supporting Jenner & Block and WilmerHale

April 12, 2025

The Society for the Rule of Law Institute recently joined two amicus briefs–alongside a coalition of legal organizations from across the ideological spectrum–urging the court to strike down the presidential executive orders targeting the law firms Jenner & Block and WilmerHale. This follows amicus briefs joined by members and leadership of the Society in support of Perkins Coie (filed by various legal organizations, former judges, and Yale’s Rule of Law Clinic).

The organizations include:

  • ACLU
  • ACLU of D.C.
  • Cato Institute
  • Electronic Frontier Foundation
  • Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression
  • Institute for Justice
  • Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University
  • National Coalition Against Censorship
  • Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press
  • The Rutherford Institute
  • Society for the Rule of Law Institute

Together, the organizations argue that the executive orders violate the First Amendment by retaliating against firms for protected advocacy and undermine the separation of powers by threatening the independence of the legal profession.

“The administration’s targeting of select law firms for punishment strikes at the heart of the rule of law and the separation of powers upon which our freedoms depend,” said Gregg Nunziata, executive director of the Society for the Rule of Law Institute. “The Society for the Rule of Law Institute vigorously opposes these unconstitutional orders and is proud to once again partner across the ideological spectrum in defense of fundamental American principles.”
