VIRTUAL EVENT: Iran, Congress, and the Future of War Powers

April 16, 2026

How can Congress exercise oversight over the U.S. conflict with Iran? What legislative and constitutional tools can it use? Does Congress have the legal power to prevent a protracted conflict that occurs without the consent of the American people?

In our upcoming webinar, “Iran, Congress, and the Future of War Powers,” on Tuesday, April 28, at 2:00 PM ET, we will join with Senior Fellow at the Columbia Law School National Security Program, Scott Anderson, and the Founder and Executive Director of the National Security Institute at Antonin Scalia Law School, Professor Jamil Jaffer, as we discuss congressional oversight of U.S. military action in Iran. We will analyze the constitutional and statutory frameworks that shape Presidential and Congressional War Powers and Congress’s oversight capability. We will also explore what options Congress has to assert its role in determining whether America engages in protracted conflicts abroad.

Jamil Jaffer is the Founder and Executive Director of the National Security Institute and Assistant Professor of Law at Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University.

Scott Anderson is the General Counsel and Senior Editor for Lawfare, a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Senior Fellow at the Columbia Law School’s National Security Law Program.

Gregg Nunziata, our Executive Director, will be our Moderator.
