Virtual Event: “How the Pardon System Works — and Why”

August 29, 2024

The ability to issue pardons is a core power of the presidency, deeply rooted in age-old concepts of justice and clemency. However, the use of the power to forgive federal crimes has frequently become controversial, especially in recent years. Presidents of both parties have come under withering criticism for how they have exercised this power. Recent events and Supreme Court decisions have increased public interest in the use and potential abuse of pardons, leading to an expanded public debate concerning practical safeguards and possible constitutional limitations.

The Society hosted an exclusive webinar to discuss these issues and more, featuring Prof. Kim Wehle of the University of Baltimore School of Law and Society Executive Director Gregg Nunziata. Prof. Wehle is the author of the new book, “Pardon Power: How The Pardon System Works — And Why,” which explores the historical context and contemporary challenges surrounding the presidential pardon.
