Gregg Nunziata on the Deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles in The Christian Science Monitor

Gregg Nunziata raised alarms in comments to The Christian Science Monitor after Judge Charles Breyer ruled that the Trump administration’s deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles violated the Posse Comitatus Act. Nunziata cautioned that, regardless of how courts ultimately rule, normalizing military involvement in civilian law enforcement threatens democratic checks and balances and should only be considered a last resort.

“Regardless of what courts ultimately say, I think this is concerning. The use of the military for domestic law enforcement has profound risks. It should be something that the federal government does as a matter of last resort and great reluctance.”
