Society Members Join Yale Clinic’s Amicus Brief Supporting Perkins Coie

April 9, 2025

Members and leadership of the Society for the Rule of Law joined an amicus brief filed by Yale Law School’s Rule of Law Clinic in Perkins Coie LLP v. U.S. Department of Justice.

Alongside 27 former senior government officials, they signed on in support of Perkins Coie’s challenge to the constitutionality of President Trump’s March 6 executive order—one of several targeting law firms and attorneys who previously represented his political opponents.

The brief argues “Nothing in the Constitution empowers the President to weaponize executive orders to punish American citizens or business entities in order to exact revenge for perceived grievances.”

Signatories on the brief include:

Donald B. Ayer, Deputy Attorney General in the George H.W. Bush Administration from 1989 to 1990

John B. Bellinger III, Legal Adviser, Department of State; Legal Adviser to NSC

Bush Administration in 2007; Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division from 2003 to 2007; Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General and Acting Associate Attorney General from 2002 to 2003; Assistant and Associate Counsel to President Ronald Reagan from 1986 to 1988
